What My Clients Are Saying…

"My mother went into a care home for 2 weeks respite care after suffering from bronchitis, which left her very weak. My aim was to get her home and be able to look after herself again. Melanie came to assess her and felt that she would benefit from some exercise regimes. She was very thorough and clearly had great empathy with elderly people. She instructed her on how to do certain exercises which would increase the strength in her arms and legs. She explained and demonstrated these very clearly and made sure my mother understood. All this gave my mother a lot of confidence and her strength and balance improved greatly."
— Louise, Derby
"Thank you so much for today it was exactly what we were looking for. All of us were really impressed with your knowledge, general manner and how well you explained everything, putting us all at ease. Everything you said made absolute sense and confirmed what we were thinking. Margaret was a bit concerned that you would make her do too much and possibly cause pain, but these fears were completely unfounded and she was really happy with all you did. We are looking forward to your next visit. Thanks again."
— Jill
"The physical progress I continue to make since the coronavirus terminated the actual exercises carried out in your presence with your encouraging guidance at my home, is no doubt the result of your professional expertise, patience and kind manner. Following an accident caused by a careless car driver, with the result of an otherwise unnecessary hip replacement, I required physiotherapy at home. Beginning originally in January, I am still regularly following your 'Exercises -- twice a day' sheet, in the belief that I shall keep progressing, with my physical confidence fully restored."

What My Clients Are Saying…

"I consulted Melanie following a Stroke. We began our sessions just as lockdown began so we used zoom, which worked very well. I was anxious to regain functionality in my stroke damaged arm and leg. Melanie devised a course of treatment that helped me regain functionality. Melanie was professional, patient and diligent in her treatment and I would not hesitate to recommend her."
— Fintan, Derby
"Without Mel my mum would not have made that progress. Her approach to mum and her professionalism were just what we all needed at such a difficult time. Mel visited my mum following her Stroke, she had problems with her speech and a significant right sided weakness, together with a history of dementia. Whilst in hospital she had not made much progress and was discharged to a nursing home without any plan for rehabilitation. After a few weeks we felt mum had improved a little and approached Mel to re assess her. Mel always included mum in any treatment plan, and always treated her with dignity and respect. She assessed her and set goals to try to improve her sitting balance and build on the movement in her right side. Mel had a marked impact on mum's care, mum built a good relationship with her and it gave us some hope of improvement."
— Barbara, Derby

What My Clients Are Saying…

"Initially the idea of remote Physio via zoom seemed nonsensical. How could it work through the medium of zoom? How wrong we were. Ann has made astounding progress. Melanie has motivated and nurtured her, doing various exercises, which have really helped her to manage her condition. The combination of the excellent and patient instructions of Melanie and being in the home environment have made online Physio a real option for those that maybe can't get out."
— Paul and Ann, Belper
"Aside from her professionalism, we find Melanie warm, friendly and personable. Dorothy is finding her goals more difficult to achieve than she had anticipated, but believes it is now more a question of confidence than physique. Working with Melanie has boosted her confidence and motivated her to press on with her exercises. She is happy to work with Melanie both in person and remotely."

Family support physiotherapy

Giving back family time by building independence

Reduce your ‘care time’ and enjoy more quality moments together

By working with your relative on building confidence in movement to regain independence, I can help to give back family time by reducing your 'care time'.

👪

Whole Family Approach

I work closely with both the individual and their family to set achievable goals and celebrate every step forward.

📖

Family Guide

I offer a guide called “Move with Confidence: A Guide for Families” to support your loved one between sessions.

💖

Quality Time

By rebuilding your loved one's independence, you can spend more time enjoying each other's company.

Are You:

  • Spending more of your time providing support for a member of your family who is facing challenges with their mobility and struggling with self-care at home?
  • Juggling your time supporting a relative with your own family needs and work, which is draining you both physically and emotionally?
  • Worried what the future holds for your relative and your family?

💕 How I Can Support You

  • Personalised treatment sessions in the home or care home, working to improve confidence and mobility.
  • Support for the whole family on how best to assist someone to move.
  • Advice on equipment or other services that could help with daily tasks to maintain independence.
  • Holistic advice on falls prevention and maintaining optimal health.
  • Support in liaison with care staff when working with someone who has paid care at home or lives in a care home.

What My Clients Are Saying…

"To have Mel to support us all with this journey, to enable us all to have some independence in what appeared to be a hopeless situation gave us hope that we could improve all our lives and the situation we found ourselves in. We had noticed that Mum had become increasingly dependent on us to support her with her basic needs with regard to preparing herself food and drinks and her mobility and confidence were rapidly fading. We felt that if she felt more confident in moving around that this would empower and enable her to become more active, not only in her own home, but out in her local community. After accessing Mel's professional services, we noticed that Mum had become more engaged with the basic exercises and these were factored into her daily routine along with her carer's help and encouragement. Mum became more focused on her future progression and we looked forward to her being more independent. My sister and I felt that it was the start of a new beginning for Mum and the future looked more positive for us all."
— Joy and Victoria, Derby
"Thank you Melanie for returning my Mum to me. Mum was withdrawn. My Dad was ill in a nursing home and Mum had to cope with a recent fractured pubic rami. Melanie asked Mum what she wanted the outcome to be after her input. Mum's request was to be able to catch a bus and go into town; also to be able to visit Dad on her own. Melanie assessed Mum and said yes this was achievable. To me this was a light bulb moment. Mum was thrilled and engaged. Melanie gave Mum lots of praise and encouragement plus hard work according to Mum! She achieved her goals and continues to see Melanie to recap on her exercises at Mum's request."

Working together
Melanie Parker Physiotherapist
★ 30+ Years Experience

My Journey

I qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist in 1990 and very early on in my career I became interested in two areas — older adult rehabilitation and neurological rehabilitation.

I have specialised in these two areas for over 25 years, working initially in the NHS and then starting my business Aspire Physio in 2008. I recently changed my business name to my own name — Melanie Parker — Move with Confidence, to represent myself and the outcome that I have helped hundreds of people achieve. I believe that I am more than my professional qualification suggests and deliver value by working holistically in looking at overall well-being to help someone move forwards, supporting not only the person but the whole family.

🏥 From NHS to Private Practice

I enjoyed many years of working in the NHS, however I started to get frustrated with not being able to deliver the quality of service that I was trained in and believed in.

The resources in the NHS and long waiting lists meant that often I wasn't able to see people when they needed it, which at times was detrimental for people in later years. Now I typically see people within 1 – 2 weeks to start moving them towards being more mobile and confident.

💡 My Light Bulb Moment

My business started from an idea I had in supporting care homes. I am very passionate about care homes having the support of health professionals and from the local community.

I believe in personalised care and improving the quality of life for those living in care homes. I started working with a group of care homes providing both physiotherapy to maintain physical abilities and working with staff in ways to enable their residents, maintaining dignity and independence. I continue to work with people living in care homes as well as people in their own homes.

🌱 Outside of Work

I recently moved to Belper and love being able to walk from my doorstep into the beautiful countryside in this area.

My favourite things to do are walking, reading, yoga and dancing Argentine Tango — which I do both in the UK and abroad.

I am passionate about improving lives of people living in care homes and the quality of care they receive. For over 20 years I have worked with people living in care homes providing support to improve or maintain physical health and abilities.

🏥 My Experience

My work has also involved working with and training care staff in safe ways to assist and empower people to move and maintain their physical abilities.

I have carried out audits to help identify areas that could be improved to enable people to live more enriching lives and staff to feel more valued.

Areas of Interest

  • Keeping people active through empowering them to have control over their physical health and independence.
  • Making care personalised by an in-depth discovery of someone's life.
  • Looking at how we value care staff in order to improve the quality of care given.

"Melanie was able to offer the Nursing team full consultation support on all aspects of Physio and worked alongside staff to assess equipment and residents' needs. Residents also benefited from the friendly and professional one-to-one service she offered meaning they no longer had to wait for lengthy NHS referrals. I would have no hesitation in recommending Melanie to anyone who was looking for either some general Physio advice or the complete care home training/consultation solution she provided to us."
